Vancouver, BC, Canada - Oct 13, 2019: The Microsoft logo is seen on the facade of CF Pacific Centre in downtown Vancouver.

What is RSAT?

RSAT (Remote Server Administration Tools) is a Windows component to manage roles and features of a windows server remotely from other Windows computers running Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. RSAT components can be installed only on Enterprise or Professional editions. It cannot be installed on the Home edition. If the computer where RSAT is installed is not part of the domain then Active Directory features cannot be used. Though some other features give the option to connect to the server. For more information pls check here.

In this example, RSAT will be installed on a Windows 10 computer that is part of the domain. And connect to a Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain Controller for administration. The feature is enabled by default in Windows 8 and above. All we have to do is install the RSAT component. For Windows 10 the application can be downloaded from the Microsoft site.

Once installed in the start-up it will show up as Windows Administrative Tools folder.

Now click on any features we want to access. In this case, we are choosing Active Directory Users and Computers. It will connect to the domain controller and allow us to make changes. Please note that we need to log in to the Windows 10 computer as an administrator. Else we won’t be able to make changes as it will be greyed out.
